Unscientific Study: Amazon Kindle Seems to Be Popular with Air Travelers

The media has recently been full of stories of the imminent demise of Amazon's Kindle, an e-book reader, due to increased competition from Sony, Barnes & Noble, and others. However, based on a personally conducted, unscientific in-flight sample, I'm not convinced that's true.

Back in June 2009, when I bought my Kindle 2, Kindles on airplanes were a pretty rare sight. Then, when I was on a flight in November 2009, I was sitting in an aisle seat reading my Kindle when the woman at the window pulled out her Kindle several minutes later. Yesterday, flying from Boston to Salt Lake City, with a sample size of two rows (my row on the left side of the plane and the row immediately in front--a total of five people), three out of the five of us were reading Kindles. I have yet to see a Kindle competitor being used on an airplane.

Agreed kindle most popular, I LOVE my kindle 2, but when I'm in Europe traveling I see the Sony ereader as kindle was not yet there. I believe kindle, Sony and soon to be Apple may be the big players. Just my unscientific opinion.
